Drivers who use City Ave. will soon see the first of the long-term improvements along the corridor between the Schuylkill Expressway and Rt. 30. aimed at improving traffic flow.
The City Ave. District obtained about $3.6 million in funding from PennDot and a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant.
The monies will be used to install improved traffic lights at 17 intersections that will include new pedestrian push buttons, pedestrian signal heads with countdown displays, several new masts with overhead signals, pavement markings, overhead street signs and 74 new ADA compliant curb ramps.
The newer traffic devices will use technology that will monitor the timing of green lights and adjust for changing traffic patterns to ease congestion.
PennDot will expects the construction to be completed by Nov. 2017.
Phase II, which will be between 5oth Street/Bala Ave. and 63rd Street/Wynnewood Road, will include improved medians, new drainage installation and other upgrades.
