SEPTA is reminding customers that planned system-wide fare increases and Regional Rail service cuts will not go into effect this week as was scheduled.
A Philadelphia Common Pleas Court ruling issued Friday evening directed SEPTA to halt all service cut and fare increase measures that were not already in place as of Friday, August 29. SEPTA is fully complying with the court’s order, which means that fares and service levels will stay as they were on Friday:
Fares: The 21.5% fare increase that was scheduled to begin on Monday, September 1 has been put on hold. All fares will remain at current prices until further notice.
• SEPTA is aware that some customers today may have been incorrectly charged $2.90, instead of $2.50, when tapping Key Cards and other contactless payment devices at bus fare validators. Any customer who has been charged $2.90 will receive a refund of 40 cents credited to their Key Card or contactless device account as soon as possible. SEPTA apologizes for this inconvenience. Additional information on SEPTA’s response to overcharges is included in the attached press release.
Regional Rail: The 20% service cut scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2, has been put on hold. Service on Tuesday will follow the same schedules that were in effect last week. Customers should refer to PDF schedules dated June 15, 2025, on SEPTA.org at https://www.septa.org/schedules?mode=regional-rail.
• Due to these last-minute changes, real-time schedules on SEPTA’s website, the SEPTA App and third-party apps may not be available right away.
• Chestnut Hill East customers are reminded that service on the entire line remains suspended until Sunday, September 7 as crews complete bridge reconstruction work and testing. More information is available at https://wwww.septa.org/news/chestnut-hill-east-bridge-rehabilitation-program/
Buses & Metro: The 20% service cut that started on Aug. 24 will remain in place. On Tuesday, Sept. 2, SEPTA will begin supplementing bus service to schools under an agreement that was reached with the City of Philadelphia last week. Updated schedules for augmented routes – 14, 20, 23, 26, 47, 63, 67, 70, 82, T2 and T5 – are posted on SEPTA’s website at https://wwww.septa.org/news/bus-metro-fall-schedules/
SEPTA’s current budget calls for service cuts, fare increases, workforce reductions and a series of other cost-cutting measures to close a $213 million structural budget deficit. The future of a proposed state funding solution that would help close that deficit remains uncertain.
